Stay Safe in Treacherous Conditions this Winter

As if driving a vehicle with 18-wheels under clear skies wasn’t difficult enough, having to drive one when it’s snowing, icy or in white out conditions raises the difficulty level to a whole new spectrum. Even the most skilled drivers must take additional cautionary measures on the road, and with Winter Storm Jonas ready to spread its wrath on the East Coast and Mid Atlantic this weekend, it is essential that anyone driving a commercial truck (or regular vehicle) is prepared to drive in treacherous conditions.

So what can truck drivers do to stay safe while on the road during difficult weather stretches this winter? Below are three tips that should help:

  1. Leave as early as possible and try to stay on main roads you know will be plowed. All drivers have felt that anxious feeling they get when they’re behind schedule, so leave as early as you can so you don’t feel rush and so you’re prepared for delays and/or or slow- moving traffic.
  2. Know your route like the back of your hand. If you plan ahead and memorize what exit name and number you need, you won’t have to worry about trying to get over and attempting to change lanes while it’s nasty out.
  3. Double check that you have everything you need in your emergency kit, including but not limited to water, a first aid kit, non-perishable foods, a flashlight and winter gear to stay warm with.

More than anything, just make sure you avoid unnecessary risks when driving during unideal conditions in the winter.

Stay safe this winter, and especially this weekend if you’re driving in or near Winter Storm Jonas.
